In 1924, Queen Mary of England received a gift: the most fabulous dollhouse in history. Alongside miniature rooms from Buckingham Palace, filled with miniature replicas of the furniture and artwork, there was a miniature library. For it, the most famous authors of the day submitted original never-before-published books. Well, “books” – the longest being around five hundred words.

The “book” which Arthur Conan Doyle contributed was called How Watson Learned The Trick, which would prove to be the shortest Sherlock Holmes story. The tale is part mystery, part comedy, and part parody on the formula that Sherlock Holmes stories would become. It is a sincere instance of pure joy from the author of literature's most famous detective.

The story is here reprinted, at several times its original size, as a double-sided broadside with original artwork.
