To accompany our edition of Enūma Eliš, the Babylonian epic of creation, we have printed the opening lines in both English and Akkadian (using the cuneiform script). The epic opens with the primordial deities Apsu (the fresh water) and Tiamat (the salt water). Their commingling sets off a chain of creation, from the most ancient gods to us.
