Behold, your guide to Dante’s Inferno — a sheet of nine genuine postage stamps, one from each of the nine circles of hell.

We took inspiration from Dante Alighieri himself and from designer and typographer W. A. Dwiggins. Dante obsessed over differentiating his circles of hell — stratifying, accounting, giving each circle its own function. Dwiggins wrote passionately on postage stamps as a means of conveying at a glance the sense of a place and its values. We combined these ideas to create a new "Map of Inferno."

The stamps are printed letterpress on genuine stamp paper. They are tearable, lickable, and, we've been told, are actually good for sending letters should you find yourself in hell.

EDITION NOTES

  • Limited to 200, numbered 1 through 200

  • The sixth broadside of No Reply Press, Autumn 2021.

  • Each broadside differs slightly in size due to the offcuts of a stamp paper sheet (which collectors are invited to remove if they wish). The average measures 5 by 9 inches.

  • Printed by hand on custom-made stamp paper using a Vandercook Universal I cylinder press.

HAND-MADE FRAMING

  • We offer museum-quality gallery frames, made specially for our broadsides. Each frame is made by hand with sustainably harvested poplar hardwood.

  • The broadside is mounted to create a slight shadow which accents and exhibits the deckle edges of the papers we use.
